The Garden Cinema Murals
Illustration, Murals, and AI-enhanced Artwork • Ongoing from 2022
Nestled in the heart of Holborn, London, The Garden Cinema is a beautifully restored art-house venue with a strong cinematic identity. I’ve had the honour of designing and illustrating the visual environment of the space, from the original downstairs bar, all the artworks on the walls and to the newly launched members’ bar upstairs.
The murals pay homage to the history, poetry, and diversity of cinema. Every image was thoughtfully composed, blending hand-drawn illustration with AI-enhanced elements.
The project spanned several years and evolved in layers, much like a film archive brought to life on the walls. It’s one of the works I’m most proud of, and the passionate team behind The Garden Cinema made it an especially fulfilling collaboration.
One of the most rewarding moments came when legendary filmmaker Terry Gilliam visited the venue. He scanned the mural, searching for one of his own films… and just when he feared he’d been left out, he found a tribute to the Baron of Muchausen. He smiled and said, “Ah, there I am.” That moment, to me, was cinematic in itself.
